Victoria’s Story

– The Heart of Studio Hummingbird

Victoria Rumens is a garden designer based in Worthing, creating beautiful, thoughtfully-designed gardens across Sussex and Surrey.

Before founding Studio Hummingbird, Victoria spent a decade in law, an environment that refined her attention to detail, thoroughness and calm decision-making. When her family moved to the coast, she followed a long-standing pull toward design. First interiors, then, naturally, gardens. It all began when a contractor sketched an idea for their decking on a napkin; Victoria went away and developed a full 3D design so her husband could truly see the space.

That moment revealed a natural aptitude for spatial vision and design, and soon her work was being recommended to new clients.

Today, Victoria guides homeowners through bringing clarity to their ideas by visualising everything in detailed 3D before they make a significant investment. Smart planting for ease of care, sustainable materials, thoughtful, refined details that make being outdoors enjoyable all year.

Why Creating a Garden You Love Feels So Hard

Achieving a truly remarkable outcome requires hundreds of interconnected decisions that finally add up to something cohesive… something that feels right in the end.

Most homeowners start scrolling Pinterest and Instagram for ideas, maybe pick up a few plants or a beautiful piece of pottery. But none of these small steps feels connected. There’s no clear path forward. And the more they look, the harder it gets…

Bringing in outside help isn’t always straightforward either. While a neighbourhood landscaper may be brilliant at installation — bringing a plan to life once it exists — what’s often missing is a professional garden designer: someone who shapes the vision, refines the layout and creates a clear, intentional plan that everything else can build from. This is the quiet advantage behind the most intentional, magazine-worthy gardens. Just as with a beautifully designed home, you need a blueprint and a clear design first… something that brings clarity to the chaos and ensures every decision supports the bigger picture.

Sussex and Beyond

Garden Design from Concept to Completion

So, how do we make your vision more tangible?

A 3D walkthrough lets you see your future garden before a single change is made on-site.

It’s the crucial first step in creating an intentional, truly high-end outdoor space.

You get the chance to experience it long before committing to the full investment.

The goal is to turn your loose ideas into something you can explore on-screen. This is the moment everything comes together — scale, light, movement, materials — so you can feel how your space will look and flow when it’s finished.

And it can prevent costly missteps and months of frustration.

  • See it clearly — Step inside a realistic 3D model of your garden, not just sketches or mood boards.
  • Test before you build — Adjust layouts, planting and flow on-screen instead of reworking them on-site.
  • Invest with confidence — Know your money is going into a space you already love.

This is how every remarkable garden begins: a clear vision made visible, followed by a deliberate course of action.

Make your garden easier to enjoy as you age

Thoughtful design now means comfort, freedom and independence for years to come.

Subtle level changes, smooth paths and human-scaled seating make every space easier to move through and linger in. It’s not about ramps or railings. It’s about discreet, elegant design that supports your future without ever compromising beauty.

A whole different world at night

Lighting design can elevate familiar spaces into something quietly extraordinary.

When daylight fades, a well-placed light reveals shape, texture and depth that you don’t see in the sun. Gentle pools of warmth create intimacy, highlight focal points and invite you to step outside long after dark.

All Studio Hummingbird plans include lighting design.

Turn everyday views into living art

A garden should be as beautiful from inside your home as it is up close.

By framing outdoor scenes through windows and doors, your garden becomes a series of compositions that shift with the seasons. Even on cold or rainy days, the view becomes part of your daily rhythm… a quiet connection to nature just beyond the glass.

Let sound and movement bring your space to life

Nature never stands still, and your garden shouldn’t either.

Wind through ornamental grasses, dappled light across leaves, the soft rustle of bamboo… all of it creates a living rhythm that changes hour to hour. Design can choreograph this movement, turning even still moments into something alive.

Let water transform the mood

The sound and reflection of water changes everything.

Whether it’s a still mirror pool catching the sky or a soft trickle that softens background noise while creating ambiance, water adds calm and dimension. It becomes a focal point, a gathering place and sometimes the quietest part of the whole garden.

Create spaces that pull you outside

The smallest, most subtle details can make stepping outside natural, even irresistible.

A warm bench in morning sun. A sheltered corner for tea. A softly lit path that leads you toward it all. When a garden feels this inviting, spending time outdoors becomes effortless. A natural part of everyday life.

How our clients feel about working with us

Victoria was a great help in designing a beautiful and practical new look for our small square plot. She took all our often confusing and conflicting requests and produced a clean simple design which was better than anything we could have imagined. She is particularly good at incorporating scale into her work so that when it is complete our garden will look both bigger and more visually interesting than we could have made it by ourselves. Brava Victoria! We would strongly recommend you!

Worthing

I was so happy to have found Victoria Rumens and to have her help me plan my garden. I had a rough idea of what I wanted, but Victoria was able to put my thoughts into a 3D plan so that I could see exactly what the garden would look like. I also found that contractors preferred to have a plan to work from.
The whole process from start to finish was a pleasure and Victoria was so helpful and accommodating of any changes I wanted to make. I ended up with a wonderful garden design and a walk-through video that made the plan come alive! The cost was very reasonable and it was worth spending on the plan to prevent costly mistakes on the job.
I would thoroughly recommend using Victoria at Studio Hummingbird for garden planning.

Tarring

I asked Victoria if she would take on my garden design project which was a challenging project. From the very first contact I knew I had contacted the right person. From phone calls to site visits and follow ups Victoria at all times was a pleasure to work with.
The designs as well as the fly through layouts were fantastic and I cannot recommend her services enough.
I now have friends interested in using her services already and my project is not yet finished which is praise to her work

Victoria of ‘Studio Hummingbird’ was recommended by our interior designer, who knows her previous work. We were not disappointed. She provided an in depth consultation to establish our aims, needs, style preferences and budget. She presented multi aspect computer generated plans, drawings and walk through designs with suggestions for plants, water feature and patios. Plus, a detailed quote and project schedule. The whole process was collaborative and she willingly accepted and included several of our suggestions.

She often works with Eddie King , of King Landscaping Ltd. He & his team were a pleasure to work with. Punctual, informative and very professional.

We are delighted with our finished garden and have no hesitation in recommending Victoria & Studio Hummingbird.

My husband was fortunate enough to win a voucher from Studio Hummingbird for a consultation with Victoria.
Victoria visited me in my garden, already with an idea of my vague thoughts. It was fascinating to hear all her interesting ideas for a design for my garden & I was left feeling very positive about how my garden could be transformed.
Victoria is very professional but, at the same time, friendly & interested & very easy to talk to. I really appreciated all her advice & hope to be able to work on this in the future.
